STEUBEN MEDAL 2023

The 2023 Steuben Association Medal has been awarded to Firefighter Peter T. Morawek of Ladder 113, which occurred on Wednesday June 7th, 2023 at the Medal Day Ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the US Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, NY.

The story:

"On the way to the box dispatch was receiving calls for smoke on multiple floors. As we were getting off the rig we heard something about people trapped on the fire floor. 

When we made it to the fire floor (14 maybe?) the boss confirmed the fire apartment door by checking for heat with a bare hand, and as I began forcing it, smoke was pushing from the seams. Once the door was forced, we encountered a medium clutter condition. We immediately began clearing the large debris from the entrance hall. After that I began a right hand search and boss and can man went left. The roof man saw the woman’s hands out the window through the smoke made a transmission and started setting up the rope. My search led me to the room she was in. She was still conscious but taking some smoke, I grabbed her and brought her out." 

It was a smoky hazey day at Medal Day this year but that didn't dampen the spirits of everyone who attended. It was

an honor to meet Peter and his family . His dad is a Battalion Chief in the 58 Battalion. He is very proud of his son as well as his whole family, especially his wife, Tiffany. We look forward to Peter 

attending an upcoming event, hopefully the Parade on 9/16/23...
