The Residence Info:
The Residenz Würzburg stands as a monumental testament to Baroque architecture and is one of the most significant palaces in Germany. Located in the heart of Würzburg, this grand castle was built in the early 18th century and has since been a beacon of cultural and historical significance, drawing visitors from around the globe.
Commissioned by the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, the Residenz is renowned for its stunning design and opulent interiors. The palace's exterior is an impressive example of Baroque symmetry and grandeur, while the interior houses a wealth of artistic treasures, including frescoes by the famed Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
One of the most notable features of the Residenz is the grand staircase, which leads to the Kaisersaal (Imperial Hall). The staircase is crowned by Tiepolo's magnificent fresco, the largest ceiling fresco in the world, depicting the four continents known at the time. The Kaisersaal itself is a sumptuous space, designed for ceremonial occasions, and is adorned with gold, stucco work, and enormous paintings.
Tourists visiting the Residenz can explore a series of elaborately decorated rooms, each with its own historical and artistic significance. The Mirror Cabinet, with its intricate woodcarvings and reflective surfaces, is a particular highlight, along with the Court Chapel, which showcases exceptional religious art.
The Residenz Würzburg is not only a feast for the eyes but also surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, which provide a serene escape from the city and offer picturesque views of the palace's facade:
Our Guide for the day. We waited to get in and experienced the only rain of the trip.
01/23
Romantic Rothenburg ob der Tauber, at the heart of the Romantische Straße tourist route in Germany, is famous for its beautifully preserved, picture-perfect medieval old town center, which is still surrounded by its defensive town wall. It is possible to appreciate the ramparts from outside the town but it is more fun to follow the sentry walk on the wall for fantastic views of the old town center, half-timbered houses, and the beautiful countryside. Access to the sentry walk is free and most of the walls are open year-round and at all times. Day-trip tours to Rothenburg are available from Frankfurt and Munich. See our excursion below:
